Housewarming Party to Celebrate Pinky the Gibbon’s New House

by - September 18, 2020

17th August 2020, Sunway City – Sunway Lagoon has a surprise for our gibbon princess, Pinky as she moves to a new house which is located in a man-made island known as Upcycled Floating Island.

Our white-handed gibbon is 15 years old, she is really smart and mischievous. Our gibbon is also known as the lar gibbon (Hylobates lar), is an endangered primate in the gibbon family, Hylobatidae. The fur colouring of the gibbon varies from black and dark-brown to light-brown, sandy colours. The hands and feet are white colour, likewise a ring of white hair surrounds the black face.

Other than that, Sunway Lagoon would like to promote the United Nation’s global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through man-made Upcycled Floating Island. The construction of the island is made by recycled waste such as Styrofoam pieces, plastic bottles & chlorine drums. This project aligned with our vision and mission towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which is Goal 15: Life on Land, to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

Sunway Lagoon’s Gibbon Island is the result of 14 months of experiment and construction by a team of eight people at a cost of RM150,000.00, following the collection of wastes weighing more than 300 kilogrammes. One of its unique features is that it’s floating and our zookeepers will row the boat to ensure her needs are taken care of.

Our global renowned SDG focus on sustainability and lifelong learning makes Sunway Lagoon Asia’s Best Attraction. We feel the responsibility to educate the public on the importance of reducing waste and believe the man-made island can create awareness of the many ways we can protect this living space of ours before it becomes a sphere of plastic.”

He also said, “A small act of kindness and compassion towards a single animal may not mean anything to all creatures, but will mean everything to one. It is Sunway’s culture to love and be kind towards each other including our furry friend.
